the estate

The sight of the vineyards, the smell of the fresh soil and the taste of Tokaj wine have captivated us for generations. Sárospatak, this beautiful historic town is home to our estate and a newly discovered treasure of the Tokaj wine region.
Our vineyards are located on four unique slopes near the Megyer-Hegyi Tengerszem. The jewel box between the two mountains is a real hidden wonderland, where the vineyards are able to show the diversity of Tokaj wines. The Király-hegy, Kútpatka, Megyer and Ciróka vineyards cover 17 hectares, (equivalent to 42 acres.)
Our soil and climate are unique due to the volcanic rocks and the proximity of the Bodrog River, which give our wines unique character and refinement. While respecting our traditions, we have a modern wine style dominated by fresh fruity notes and the characteristics of the slopes. We like to experiment, so we have both light reductive batches and deep, complex Tokaj specialities in our palette.
We believe that without chemicals and additives, by organically tending the vines and treating the wine, we can reveal the true character and diversity of the terroir.
We value the traditions of the Tokaj wine region, cherish our family heritage and are committed to modern, quality winemaking!

VINEYARDS

Our vineyard is made up of four microclimactic vineyards with wonderful soil conditions. The inimitable terroir of the Királyhegy, Megyer, Kútpatka and Ciróka vineyards is shaped by the volcanic rocks built up from riolite tuff, the special soil structure and the proximity of the Bodrog. This rare and fortunate combination gives our grapes an exceptional character, which, thanks to careful attention, can also show their special face in wine.

We have great respect for this extraordinary gift of nature, which is why we are committed to organic farming! We believe that by cultivating the vineyards organically, without chemicals and additives, the vineyards with their different exposure and soil structure can better reveal the characteristics of the traditional Tokaj grape varieties, the diversity of the Furmint, the kindness of the Muscat and the spiciness of the Hárslevelű.

For many, organic is an elusive concept - for us, it is a basic element of living together with nature. Of course, we also spray because we have to protect the vineyard from many things, but we do not use synthetic chemicals, fertilizers or pesticides in the vineyards. We only use rapidly degradable natural substances or other biological control methods to keep the plants healthy and strengthen their immune system. This is often more expensive and labour-intensive, but we believe that the vines and nature will reward this kind of care in the long run.

Handcraft does not only mean organic and low intervention cultivation for us, but careful attention to the vine, always keeping in mind that the quality of the wine is primarily decided in the vineyards. In our mid-wire cordon cultivation, we prune the vine stock back leaving only 1-2 buds on them. During our work over the year, we keep pruning the bunches of grapes to reach only 6-7 bunches per vine stock to maximise flavour concentration by the time of the harvest. This allows the best of the terroir to be concentrated in the grapes.

WINERY

We make wines that are able to show our vineyards' individual qualities and the terroir's characteristics. We work with the three classic Tokaj grape varieties: furmint, hárslevelű and muscat. Tradition is important to us, but we also represent modern wine styles. As an organic winery, we also consider the main principles of organic farming in our production and winemaking. In our winemaking, we consider it important to preserve the fresh fruity notes and to emphasise the unique characteristics of our vineyards, while keeping the alcohol levels low.

We want to show that Tokaj has a thousand faces. The Tokaj style is often associated with heavier wines, but a light dry muscat from Tokaj can easily challenge the Oliver Irsai. Furmint and hárslevelű are varieties that, with their diversity, provide a beautiful base for both more complex and lighter wines. Different varieties and vintages require different barrel usage, so we work with various barrel sizes and styles. To make truly stylish wines requires considerable experience, precise attention and refined taste. This shows that winemaking is truly an art.

We make fresh, fruity batches, sparkling wines, and elegant champagnes. We also showcase traditional Tokaj in our interpretation: in addition to premium dry vineyard selections, we have award-winning late harvests, szamorodni and aszú wines.

We like to experiment, not only with our wines. Our estate provides us with plenty of goods, and we're thankful for them every single day. We love getting creative with what we have, whether it's showcasing them on the seasonal menu at Harsányi Dűlőbisztró or enjoying them as pálinka, jam, or oil.

FAMILY HERITAGE

The Harsányi Winery is located in the eastern part of Tokaj-Hegyalja, near Sárospatak, directly under the Tengerszem of Megyer Hill, which has been chosen as the most beautiful natural wonder of the country. The estate is unique in that, with the exception of the Rákosi period, it has been in the family for more than 170 years. On tourist maps it is also mentioned by name as Rick tanya (Rick's farm). In 1850, the seed of the vineyard was bought by the current owner's (Gábor Harsányi) great-great-grandfather, Jakab Rick, who was the founder of the first pharmacy in Sárospatak.

The farm began to flourish during the time of Gusztáv Rick, also a chemist-pharmacist. For many years he was the chemistry expert and certifier at wine competitions in Tokaj-Hegyalja. The real blossoming came in the time of the great-grandfather, Béla Rick, who graduated in agriculture and thus developed and cultivated the Rick brothers' vineyard - "Ciróka", as the family called it - to the highest standards. This was then shattered by the Second World War, followed by deportation and total confiscation of the estate during the Rákosi era.

The family winery was then taken up in the 1970s by Dr. Ádám Harsányi (grandson of Béla Rick), a doctor in Budapest, but family tradition and his heart had drawn him to Sárospatak. During the restitution, most of the original vineyard was returned to the family, but even then, the main aim was to continue the family tradition.

In 2012, Gábor Harsányi assumed responsibility for the estate after his father retired. Like his ancestors, "Ciróka" occupies a central place in his life, despite the fact that he has chosen a different vocation in civil work. By taking ownership of the estate, he opened a new era in the history of the winery. With the family heritage in mind, he has expanded the size of the estate and moved to the most modern viticultural and oenological techniques. A committed believer in quality, handcrafted winemaking, his work combines tradition, as well as modernity and expertise.

HOSPITALITY

Without doubt, the best place to taste any wine is where it's made. The embrace of our vineyards, the splash of the Bodrog, the song of the blackbirds and the mountain valley breezes make every sip of wine a lasting experience, every bite tastier and every conversation more meaningful!

In Sárospatak, in the shade of the Tengerszem, you will find one of the most unique wine estates in Tokaj: The Harsányi Winery and Dűlőbistro (Vineyard Bistro). An unmissable destination for anyone who really wants to experience the spirit of Tokaj-Hegyalja. This building is home to the processing facilities, the ageing cellars and one of Sárospatak's favourite restaurants, the Dűlőbisztró. It is possible to visit the cellars and take part in guided wine tastings, but many people visit just for the delicious food or the atmosphere of the place.

From the terrace of the Dűlőbistro, you can enjoy a truly magical experience with a panoramic view of the mountains and valleys. Our menu includes dishes of international cuisine combined with Zemplén gastronomy. We use walnuts, quince, elderflowers and other products from the Harsányi estate.

We also offer other activities for groups. In addition to wine tastings and farm visits, we can also arrange a tour of the vineyards in a jeep, archery or even a pleasure cruising. For those who come to Sárospatak for a longer period of time, we can also provide accommodation. For more information, please visit the Dűlőbistro menu at our website or click here.

KIRÁLYHEGY CIRÓKA MEGYER KÚTPATKA

KIRÁLYHEGY

Királyhegy is the oldest historic vineyard of Sárospatak. The south-eastern, cool slope is based on rhyolitic tuff although there are spots of andesite which is also very common in volcanic territories. The wines of the slope have a tense acidic character and beautifully developing, particularly rich minerality. Furmint and yellow muscat are grown in this territory on 20 to 30-year-old highly productive vine stocks.

CIRÓKA

The core of the vine territory, the heart of the land was purchased by Jakab Rick the great-great-grandfather of the current owner (Gábor Harsányi) in 1850. The land has been owned by the same family for 170 years except for the Rákosi era. The base rock of the slope is rhyolitic tuff covered with less rocky, argillaceous, thick and fat soil. Due to the special terroir and its favourable south-western position the wines from here are playful, fruity and light. Furmint, hárslevelű and yellow muscat give us excellent wines from here.

MEGYER

The history of Megyer hill or slope in Sárospatak reaches back to the Middle Ages. It is most probably named after the Hungarian Megyer tribe from the era of the Hungarian conquest. The steep, south-western slope is characterised by very varied soil structures and colourful composition. There are high amounts of clay and fine grains of kaoline which results in a porous structure on the rocky ground. The wines of the slope are heavy, rich and creamy. The 20 to 30-year old vine stocks give us furmint and hárslevelű.

KÚTPATKA

It is an exceptionally well-positioned slope with excellent conditions to spoil wine lovers with outstanding quality wines. It is a very steep and high territory where the number of sunny hours is expressly favourable for the grapes due to the southern position of the slope. It is based on rhyolitic tuff, which is typical in the area with ferric oxide precipitations. The soil structure is compact and rocky. Wines made from the grapes harvested here have good acidic structure and higher alcohol content and are complex and rich due to the excellent position of the territory. We find furmint and scented hárslevelű in the territory. The vine stocks may be as old as 40 years.
