The art of wine tasting: tips and tricks

Anyone with even the slightest interest in gastronomy will have encountered the phenomenon of wine tasting. You might think it's the easiest thing in the world to do, since all you need is a little wine. Most people, especially at first, feel little or no difference. They can tell whether it is white or red, sweet or dry, tasty or not.
But if you want more, it's worth doing a little more research and learning how to taste, so you can really appreciate the subtle differences that can make a wine truly special.

Here are some wine-tasting tips to help you look at wine differently.

  1. Be patient, don't rush
This is true in the short and long term. You may not fully appreciate the peachy or mineral notes yet, but you will in time. In the same way, there's no rush to taste the wine. Taste slowly and carefully.
  1. Use your senses
See, smell, taste, touch. First, just look at the wine. What colour is it? What do you think it might indicate? How translucent, how does it flow down the glass? Smell it, even close your eyes to rule out everything else. Swirl the wine to release as many aromas as possible. What do you smell? Taste it, hold it in your mouth for a while, let more flavours come through and you'll get to know more of it over time.
  1. Know your terroir
The terroir is the area of origin of the wine and its characteristics. All wines are best tasted where they are made. Many places offer culinary delights and cultural experiences, but for a truly unique experience, taste wine in its place of origin. Tasting wine here is not just an activity, but a unique sensory adventure. Not incidentally, you'll see where it came from, you'll see the vineyard, the land, the sun setting behind you as you taste your way around the estate.
  1. Experiment
The more wine you taste, the more varieties, the more you will feel the differences. You don't have to start with the rarities straight away. Instead, experience the different varieties and types once, through basic wines.
  2. Ask questions
Don't be afraid to ask the winery staff. You'll learn a lot about the wine's production and history, which may even shed a new light on the current batch.

True wine lovers know that good wine tasting also depends on the location. Sárospatak boasts the famous Harsányi Winery and Dűlőbistro, where tradition meets modernity. During the cellar visit don't just sip, but also learn the secrets of the vineyards and the art of wine making.

Now that you've immersed yourself in the art of wine tasting, don't hesitate to plan a wine tour to Sárospatak. Discover the exceptional wines, and the beautiful landscape and enjoy the gastronomic experiences that are only available in this region.
